GitHub is not a directory, but it behaves like one for developer products: topics, releases, README badges and curated “awesome” lists all create discovery paths, and stars act as social proof.

Publishing your own repository is free and immediate with an account; inclusion in curated lists depends on their maintainers. Links from repositories are commonly reported as dofollow, on a DR 97 domain.

This works best for products with code to show — SDKs, CLI tools, templates or open-source components. Without something installable, a repository adds little.
